I am really what most people would call a radical, left-wing progressive but, much to the chagrin of my fellow left-wingers, I always fought against “gun control”. As a person of color, I always recognized the value of being able to protect yourself, possibly from agents of our own government, who wished to do us harm.
However, I was always turned off by 2nd Amendment advocates like the NRA whose underlying message always seemed aimed, not at all freedom-loving Americans, but at suburban and rural white people, playing on their fears of armed black and poor people.
The unfortunate affect of this being that any valid points that they may make is overshadowed by a persistent image of racism and fear-mongering.
