|A Rialto police officer is recovering today at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton after he was shot in a police department locker room.|
The officer was taken to the hospital around 5:20 p.m. Friday after he was accidentally shot once in the upper left arm by another officer as they were examining a Winchester 12-gauge shotgun, Lt. Joe Cirilo said. The accidental shooting happened as the officers, who both have been with department about one year, prepared for duty, he said.
Cirilo said he would not identify the officers, who both are in their 20s. The officer who was shot required extensive surgery to repair nerve damage and was in the hospital’s extensive care unit, Cirilo said. The other officer was placed on paid administrative leave, Cirilo said.
The officer who was shot is expected to recover, Cirilo said.
Rialto Police Chief Mark Kling asked San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies to investigate the shooting, Cirilo said. The Rialto Police Department also is conducting an internal investigation, he said.
